Quality healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and Florida’s families deserve the peace of mind that a child’s hospital visit won’t break the bank. That is why Senator Taddeo believes in Medicare-for-All and expanding Medicaid in our state. With so many facing the impossible choice of paying for a medical bill or putting food on the table, Annette has proudly sponsored legislation that would put Medicaid expansion on the ballot and close the infamous coverage gap for over 800,000 residents of the Sunshine State.
Senator Taddeo has never—and will never—stop fighting for a quality public education system that puts students first. Her entire career, she has been a passionate advocate for ending high-stakes standardized testing and stopping the flow of money from our public schools to for-profit corporations. It is unconscionable to be discussing arming teachers when they earn $10,000 below the national average, and she will always vote against legislation that deprives Miami-Dade students of the funding and support that they deserve. In the Florida Senate, she introduced and co-sponsored bills that would study best practices for recruiting and retaining teachers, as well as ensures them a living wage so that they they can best support our students and help them get ahead.
Traffic in Miami-Dade is an issue littered with broken promises and failed action. As a State Senator, Annette has fought for better roads, lowering tolls, and real mass transit options that would help our community, not big road contractors. She firmly believes in using state grants to explore new options to alleviate congestion as well as add an alternative transportation authority to DOT’s operations. During her first year in office, Annette co-presented legislation that would bring $25 million in state funding for transit solutions in Miami-Dade County.
Protecting Our Environment
There is no denying that climate change is real, it is man-made, and unless we do something, it will completely reshape our South Florida communities. Senator Taddeo has been a champion for a multi-faceted approach that keeps our water and our community safe—she has introduced legislation to ban fracking and has sought a ban on offoshore drilling to protect our coastline. Tallahassee must do more to boost natural disaster preparedness and restore our precious Everglades, which why she co-sponsored the Florida Forever Fund which would finally respect the wishes of the vast majority of voters who supported Amendment 1.
All families, no matter their immigration status, are precious. Our DREAMers are our most precious resource, and Annette is a proud defender of immigrant families with stories similar to her own. No community should to live in fear of law enforcement and no child should prevented from attending Florida schools and providing a better life for their families. Senator Taddeo has relentlessly fought to reunite families that have been separated at the border and she will continue to call on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform that protects DACA recipients.
Common Sense Gun Reform
Even before unspeakable tragedy had struck Florida, Senator Taddeo stood firmly with the majority of Americans who support common sense gun reform. Annette has long been an advocate for sensible legislation that will keep our communities safe, introducing SB 196, a ban on assault weapons and expanded magazines in the state of Florida. We need to do more than thoughts and prayers; we need action to keep our children safe.
Investing in South Dade
Senator Taddeo has been a champion for her community for her entire career. She’s always put education first, securing nearly $100 million in appropriations for FIU and Miami Dade College, boosting our ability to make higher education a reality for our community. Additionally, thanks to her efforts, $80 million in state funds will flow to Miami-Dade public schools for workforce education programs as well as $800,000 in funding for the Miami Military Museum Education Center. Annette also advocated for—and appropriated—$25 million for post-Hurricane Irma beach recovery and help restore our battered neighborhoods.
Annette knows the value that state funds can do to help local organizations, which is why she’s always kept them in mind when she goes to Tallahassee to fight for us. In the legislature, she secured funds for the Institute for Child and Family Health, a local non-profit who has helped families for almost 75 years, as well as directing $250,000 to fund “Babies N Brains” which provides early education programs for children of incarcerated parents. Senator Taddeo knows the importance of helping folks get back on their feet, this is why she helped allocate $250,000 of funds to the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust. Senator Taddeo has been champion for District 40, directing $1 million for Zoo Miami, a vital economic and educational resource in District 40.
First responders are heroes who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. Senator Taddeo has been their voice in the Florida Senate, directing $400,000 to fund the Miami Fire and Rescue Department Mobile Command Center, as well as $1 million for UM’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center to research cures for firefighters with cancer.
